Extract of sample "The Bundle vs The Ego Theory Discussion"

Between the Bundle Theory and the Ego Theory, the former is right. According to the Bundle Theory, the unit of consciousness cannot be explained through people but as a range of events and states of mind. These series comprise a life each, thus refuting the idea that a person exists separately from the body. For example, a teleporter is a device that can read matter’s configuration while destroying it and later taking the information over to another location. This information is read by the receiver as it establishes a replica of the matter. The individual dies for all intensive reasons while the replica picks up where the individual has left. The replica is someone very similar to the individual rather than the individual being himself/herself. While the replica is contiguous psychologically to the extent of complete dematerialization, its cause is not normal. The belief that a teleporter takes the individual to Mars is the wrong line of reasoning because the individual wants the person existing on Mars to be him/her which is not possible. This line of reasoning is hence fallacious as it lies under the Ego Theory. Ego Theory suggests that the continued existence of an individual is explained through experiential persistence. For example, split-brain patients’ brains are deprived of the dominant hemisphere due to which, their left-hand writes blue and the other writes red when they are asked what colour they see when presented with a blue placard appearing on one side and a red on another. The Ego Theory separates an individual from experiences which is wrong. Read More
