Stress experienced by Nick Falzone in the movie "Pushing Tin" In the movie “Pushing Tin”, the main character Nick Falzone experienced stressed caused both by work and non-work related stressors. Nick may have a high tolerance for job related stress because he was cocky with the job of an air controller that is considered as one of the most stressful job. He however experienced stress when a newcomer came in by the character of Russell Bell. Russell seemed to outdo Nick with the job and this caused him stress because his bravado is threatened.

Nick’s stress was aggravated by a non-work related stressor when he slept with Russell’s wife Mary. As a consequence, he anticipated that Russell may get back at him and this caused him perceived stress considering that they are already competitors at work. These combined work and non-work stressors made Nick paranoid especially when his wife Connie told him that she indeed slept with Russell. Nick’s response to these stressors is more psychological because he was getting paranoid with Russell.

First, he thought that Russell was harassing him when the plane he rode changed course with Russell on the traffic control. This is further aggravated when Russell was hailed as a hero when he opted to stay to direct a plane during a bomb threat hoax of which Nick left. Nick used to pride to be number one at work and he was devastated when Russell outdid him and slept with his wife. The distress result was lethal. Nick messed up at work and nearly caused two plane collisions and his wife also left him.

He was able to recover however when the perceived stressor was remove that Nick did not change the course of the plane he rode but rather to prioritize a plane with a medical emergency.
