In this paper, we will discuss the role of a class teacher in raising attainment and meeting the needs of Black Caribbean students. 2. Strategies for Teachers Gillborn (1997) states, “Black students are suffering disproportionately as schools face increasing pressure to prove their worth in relation to crude performance indicators”. Teachers can play a considerable role in improving students’ performances. Ragos (2010) states, “The influence of a great teacher is reverberating”. While managing a class of Black Caribbean students, some major issues that a teacher needs to consider include managing students’ behaviors, managing students’ involvement in activities other than studies, encouraging good performances, regularly monitoring the students, monitoring students’ performances, showing care to the students, and making students punctual. 2.1 Create Awareness One of the best ways to improve attainment of Black Caribbean students in classrooms is to create awareness among them regarding their presence in the classrooms.

The teacher should tell the students that they should be fully dedicated towards the studies while in classroom as it in their own benefit. Appreciation encourages and motivates the students to excel in their educational careers by showing good grades. A good teacher is one who not only encourages the classroom performances of the students but also encourages the students in sports activities. Encouragement plays a critical role in the success of a student and it is the job of a teacher to encourage the students and make them take part not only in classroom activities but also in all social activities.

Students also respect those teachers who love them and encourage them for their good performances. 2.3 Monitoring the Students Another important step which the teacher of Black Caribbean students needs to take is monitoring of students’ activities in the classroom. The teacher should keep an eye on each and every activity of the students in order to make sure that they do not get involved in any kind of bad activity. If any student is found inactive in the studies, he should be notified and even then if that student does not show interest in studies, the parents of the student should be called in the school in order to discuss the behavior of the student with his parents. 2.4 Responding to Students The teacher of Black Caribbean students needs to respond to the queries of the students in order to satisfy them.

A teacher should never ignore the query of any student. It is also one of the main responsibilities of a teacher to strengthen the concepts of the students and it can only happen if the teacher shows interest by responding to all questions raised by the students about the lecture. A good teacher i
