Helping out Older People who do not have Children Summary of the Work The work I do is all about taking care of the old who do not have their own children. I am there for them and watching every move they make. The work involves taking care of them when they are sick by taking them to the hospital and making sure they follow the doctor’s prescription very well till they get healed. I wash, feed, cook for them and wash their clothes. I also take them around for short walks and have fun with them. Because these people lack company taking time and being with them just talking about life and everything drives boredom away from them. Old people are like little children and need a lot of care and love from their children and families, something that these people lack. Old people go through a lot if they do not have people around to assist them. My clients face many difficulties and many challenges as they grow older. I decided to help them out in their need because as they continue to grow old without children, they tend to feel appreciated and not cared for. These old people need a lot of support and giving them the support makes them happy and they get to enjoy life to the full just like they used to enjoy when they were young. Doing this work brings a lot of joy and memories into their world, and satisfaction and happiness in mine. Reasons for Doing This Work When people grow old the need for long term care certainly grows. The longer they (old people) live, the more likely they fall prey to chronic diseases. This works gives me the opportunity and honor to help the needy in one way or another and ensuring that they do not lack anything in their lives that I can afford to give, especially company. Watching old people struggle to make ends meet hence making out a living in the cruel world made me volunteer into helping them. Some of these old people had children who died and others had no chance of having any more of them. Helping the old people feels great as they are a bunch of blessings to many. Being around old person who do not have children brings a lot of happiness to them as they take you to be as their own child. They need constant care because many people have neglected them and do not want to be associated with them. They are either left on their own or thrown away in the streets. This leaves them in a bad situation and many of them if they fail to get care they die due to stress or chronic diseases. Benefits of This Work The benefits for helping out the old people are many. The benefits are to the care giver and the person who is being taken care of. The old are very special people in our lives as they give us moral teachings. Some of these elderly people have wealth which they give as gifts for helping them out voluntarily. The gifts are given out of will by these old people because they do not have anyone else to offer this material wealth. The elderly persons also benefit by being taken care of in all aspects of life and health. They get psychological support from the people who take care of them. An old person feels appreciated and happy and in most times the old person is overcomes stress under the company of other people who are caring. They also gets spiritual nourishment because the people who take of them are believers in the word of God. Spiritual nourishment is important and this person who get well nourished and should yearn for the spiritual milk as stated in the book of 1 Peter. Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good (New International Version, 1 Peter 2: 1-3). Favorite Aspect of the Work When the elderly are better taken care of they tend to live for long. Seeing them happy is all that matters as their happiness means a lot and this is a blessing in itself. Seeing them relaxed is all that matters as they live in peace and their minds are at peace in a loving and caring environment. Listening to them talk is my best part as their words convey a lot of wisdom and experience and so do their teachings. Disadvantages of the Work Caring for the old is very multi-faceted and it is often very emotionally difficult. Taking care of the elderly is not an easy work at all as it needs strength, will and determination to do it hence one has to sacrifice themselves a lot for their service. Some of these old people may be paralyzed and they need to be carried from place to place and this is very tiresome. This work needs a lot of money even though it is a voluntary work and it needs capital for the upkeep of the elderly for their food, clothing and medication. One has to be there each and every time to make sure they take their medication and eat well. In order to make them feel comfortable recreational facilities are required for relaxing. This is important because it makes them feel relaxed and forget their worries and fears. One must understand their different needs psychologically, emotionally and physically. Impacts of the Work on Life Taking care of the elderly prepares one for living a more ethical life. One gets to know how to treat different kinds of people and make them feel happy. This work takes one to another level in a world that many people do not like to venture into. It is a source of wisdom and encouragement to both the care giver and the old person. Respect in paramount in this aspect and it brings blessings. These elderly people are like parents and respect for parents adds the days of our life as the Bible states in the Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai. “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you” (New International Version, Exodus 20: 12).
