Virtualization Comparison Name Institution Date Virtualization Comparison Introduction Virtualization is a concept that involves the use of technology that has the ability of providing a layer of abstraction between the computer hardware and software that runs them. Virtualization process is important in terms of ensuring that the computers can several operating systems in one machine. A single physical server is usually divided into multiple logical servers through the use of virtualization (Ong, 2010). This plays a significant role in terms of allowing the computer to perform different tasks at once and hence benefiting the users. Currently, three main virtualization solutions are available in the market and they include; VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V and VERDE by Virtual Bridges. The paper thus discusses the difference between the three virtualization solutions in terms of desktop virtualization and server virtualization. Desktop virtualization VMware The desktop virtualization allows the computer to run on multiple operating systems through VMware. The desktop virtualization allows the users to run x86-64 compatible operating systems on a single personal computer and hence benefiting the users. VMware fusion also plays an important role in terms of the desktop virtualization. It provides functionality for the users of the Intel Mac platform. Full compatibility with other machines is also provided through the desktop virtualization. This enables the desktops to work effectively and increase their efficiency when working with different operating systems. The VMware desktop virtualization also has a VMware player. This enables the users who do not have a license to use the VMware workstation or VMware fusion. This software has the potential of converting the desktops into a virtual machines and hence conviniencing the users. The desktop virtualization through VMware enables the users to run different apps on multiple operating systems (Zoppis, 2010). The building of clouds is also supported through the use of the virtualization software and hence benefiting the users. On the other hand, testing and debugging is also possible through the virtualization software and hence its advantage to the users. The VMware desktop virtualization plays an important role in terms of increasing the productivity of the desktop. The running of the windows is also enhanced on the desktop through the VMware desktop virtualization (McCrory, 2006). Microsoft Hyper-V The Microsoft Hyper-V desktop virtualization provides a centralized desktop delivery solution. It has the ability to store and operate workloads through the windows client operation systems, server based virtual machines and it supports remote desktop protocol. The desktop virtualization has an important feature which is the remote app and desktop connection. The automation process can be used for the purposes of ensuring that the configuration is done. The virtualization is usually isolated from the device of the client. A grid is usually utilized for the purposes of running a VMs and it also acts as the virtualization host. The Microsoft Hyper-V desktop virtualization also utilizes the use of a repository with resources that supports the process (Leinenbach, 2009). The profile of the users and the transparent local operating system are utilized for the dynamic application. Microsoft desktop optimization app is also utilized as an application for the virtualization. A system center management suite with virtual machine manager is also utilized for the purposes of simplifying deployment. It is also important to note that a network connection is usually important in terms of delivering a desktop on demand. It is also important to note that the users may also have full rights in terms of flexibility. It allows the users to run both x86-32 and x86-64. However, it does not support the home editions. Microsoft Hyper-V desktop virtualization also supports the windows operating system. The virtualization also supports most of the recent concepts that are beneficial to the users in terms of using the desktops (Velte, 2009). VERDE Virtual Bridges Virtual Bridges is considered the leader in terms of the desktop virtualization. VERDE desktop virtualization plays an important role in terms of enhancing the experience of the users. The virtualization ensures that the management process of the desktop operations is simplified. The virtualization also supports multiple end point devices (Lange, 2012). This means that the data of the users or application settings can be delivered across a variety of devices like the smart phones and the tablets. The performance of the desktops is also enhanced regardless of the location. This is important to the users for the purposes of providing quack access of the users to their personal data and hence increasing the efficiency of their performance. The security of the data is also enhanced through the process of desktop virtualization by VERDE. It also allows the users to run different apps at the same time and hence improving on the efficiency of the desktops. However, it is important to note that the virtualization process using VERDE is expensive and it is also complex which hinders its use. Multiple operating systems can also be run through the use of VERDE desktop virtualization. A storage capacity is usually required for the purposes of ensuring that the desktop virtualizations successful. Linux and Windows operating system is also supported by VERDE virtualization. High performance connectivity is also enabled through the use of the desktop virtualization using VERDE (Cui, 2012). Server virtualization VMware VMware Vsphere is usually utilized in terms of server virtualization. It has the potential of setting up virtual machines through the VMware server. This is for the purposes of ensuring greater performance of the server is achieved. The available features also plays an important role in terms of allowing for flexibility and reliability and hence conviniencing the users. Vmotion is a concept that is usually used for the purposes of running a virtual machine while the operating system is still running and servicing users. This increases the efficiency and hence leading to faster performance which is important to the users. Storage Vmotion also plays an important role in terms of increasing the efficiency of the server. It has the capability of moving a running machine from one storage device to the other while the operating system is still running. This is important in terms of ensuring that multiple tasks can be carried out by the server. VMware virtualization server also has important features like the distributed resource scheduler which enables the balancing to take place and hence carrying out of multiple tasks. High availability is also an important concept of the server virtualization of VMware. Through the feature, the server will automatically restart on another host incase of failure and hence ensuring that the operations proceed. Through the VMware server virtualization, Linux and windows operating systems can be used. VMware vcenter also plays an important t role in terms of increasing the reliability of the server as it provides extra services (Dittner, 2011). Microsoft Hyper-V The Microsoft Hyper-V server virtualization is for the benefits of the users. It mainly utilizes the combination of hypervisor management software, server and storage services. The server utilization supports windows operating systems, Linux and any other 32 or 64 bit systems. The server virtualization is both efficient and effective and hence allowing the users to save on costs. However, it allows for the optimal usage of multiple systems. The server virtualization supports the quick migration of applications from one physical server to the other with a minimal downtime. However, it is also important to note that Microsoft Hyper-V dies not support the virtualized USB ports and hence its limitation in terms of running the software that is protected by dongles. Although the server virtualization supports the quick migrations, it does not support live migration. However, it is also important to note that some of the recent versions of Microsoft Hyper-V support the live migration. The recent versions have also been modified for the purposes of ensuring that it supports simultaneous live migrations and hence increasing the efficiency of the servers. The Microsoft Hyper-V server virtualization also utilizes the SMB shares for the purposes of storage. The resource pool of the users is also enhanced through the server utilization. This is also for the purposes of improving on the experience of the users. However, it is also important to note that the management tools for Microsoft Hyper-V are not compatible with the Windows Vista Home Basic or Window Vista Home premium (Kelbley, 2010). VERDE by Virtual Bridges A hypervisor is important for the purposes of ensuring that the server can be efficient. It has the potential of running offline and hence its advantage among the users. A huge storage space is usually required for the purposes of running the server which may also be expensive to the users. The server virtualization also supports a strong image management tool that is effective and it plays an important role in terms of ensuring that the users are not inconvenienced. The server virtualization also enables the users to carry out multiple tasks which play an important role in terms of ensuring increasing the efficiency of the server. Security of the data is also enhanced through the server virtualization process. This means that the any security breach is detected immediately and hence ensuring total protection of the data (Mahmood, 2009). However, the server virtualization is expensive and it may impact negatively on some of the users. The consistency of the performance is also enhanced through the virtualization of the sever. Quick migration is also supported by the virtualization of the server using VERDE. Linux and Windows operating system is also supported by VERDE server virtualization. Conclusion In conclusion, it is evident that the virtualization solutions play an important role in terms of increasing the efficiency of the desktops and the servers. It is also evident that each of the virtualization solution offers unique services to the users. The experience of the users is also enhanced through the virtualization process. This also simplifies the abilities of the users to carry out different tasks using their computers. References Ong, H. (2010). System-level virtualization research at Oak Ridge National laboratory.
