Your full September 24, Why College Matters The biggest reason Delbanco describes in his article regarding why college still matters in the lives of students is the economic one. A person with a college degree or higher earns more than one with a high school degree only, because a college degree holder is considered to be more skilled and knowledgeable than a high school degree holder. That is why college degree has replaced the high school degree in terms of minimum qualification needed for job in labor market.

The second reason why college matters is the political one in Delbanco’s view. An educated citizenry is crucial for a republic to flourish and make progress, because the opinion of the people rates high when it comes to selecting and electing good leadership for the country. If people are more educated, they will understand the genealogy of political ideas and practices, and thus, they will make wise decisions when polling for a candidate in elections. This way, sensible leadership will come forward that will make better decisions for the future of the country.

The third reason why college matters is education for citizenship, according to Delbanco. Going into a college broadens a person’s horizon about life and the world. He comes to know about literature, art, politics, and sociological and philosophical issues that he can never enjoy without going to a college. He becomes able to satisfy his natural craving for learning and growing. His personality grooms, and he is able to face the world with all his energy.
