The use of reports in university assessment Abstract Working in a group is essential for success. Every organisation whose department functions together achieves success. It is imperative that all section work in tandem and while doing so managers come up with report showing how it will help to perform better. To work together needs to be inculcated at the university level. It teaches how to react in situation. It also helps to prepare for things which a student will face in the outside world. It helps the student to prepare report by considering all the important points thus helping students in the real life. When students encounter such a situation in real life students know what all needs to be covered. Doing this at a young age helps as it is a learning phase and whatever the student learns at this age the students are better able to apply it. It helps to understand the key success factor of a report. Even research has shown that it helps as students are better able to keep that learning and apply in real life. In this world the success of any organisation depends on how well one performs. Efforts need not be individual. It requires collective effort where people come together and prepare a report which shows ways to improve. For this, people have to work together. Even companies which have succeeded have been because of the efforts of all the departments. For this all departments work together. To do so it is important to understand the behaviour. This helps to react in a proper way. Also, when different department works on the same thing the report prepared contains various important matters which will be useful to students as by preparing reports students get an idea about it. Having reports at university level prepares student for real life. In real life when a student is working students will have to prepare reports. When students start doing reports at an early age students realize what all important needs to be considered. So, when students make a report in real life scenario students know what all important points need to be covered. These points are ingrained at a young age. Thus it helps. Building reports makes teaching better. Students are better able to retain information. The understanding is better. According to Mcmillian & Weyers, 2006, building a report deals with different aspects and every small things need to be considered so it teaches the student to deal with all important matter. It prepares to face what the world demands. Students are able to handle such situation when they face in real world. A research also shows that having reports help to prepare students for the future as companies also prefer students who have been making reports in their curriculum as students are better prepared to do so. (Andrew, 1960) This thus prepares managers for the future as it is easy to learn in the learning phase. Reports help the universities and students in various ways. The ways in which it is helping both the students and university are Firstly, it helps the universities to understand whether the students are able to articulate what has been taught. (Walvoord, 2009) When universities give assignments to students it is on the basis of what has been taught. Students work upon their learning. Students also gather important information from outside sources. This helps to broaden learning. When the learning is presented it helps the universities to understand whether the student has learned. Secondly, it helps the universities to understand whether the student has been able to apply the lessons learnt in real life scenes. Students are provided cases from real life. Here students have to apply the learning. This helps the universities to understand whether the student was able to grasp what was taught. It helps the students as students know how the learning’s are applicable. Students are able to understand how to apply it. This makes learning fun and is better able to retain it. Thirdly, it helps the universities to find out whether the objective of teaching was met. (Walvrood, 2009) Every course has an objective. When a student is told to prepare a report on the basis of what universities have taught by applying all the concepts it is beneficial. The report when analyzed by the universities helps universities to understand whether their course objective was achieved. (Walvrood, 2009) This helps to prepare better teaching method for the future. If universities find that students are not able to apply it well then universities will need to come up with better strategies for future students. Fourthly, it helps the universities to improve their future teaching process. (Walvrood, 2009) Since, the universities know after looking at the assignments the areas which needs to be stressed upon. When the entire batch performs in the same way universities know that there has been certain error in the teaching process. This helps the universities to come up better methods to teach. It thus benefits the students as students will be able to apply this learning in real life. It helps universities to meet the main objective as preparing reports prepare the students for things to come in the future. Fifthly, it helps to fix accountability on students and teachers. (James, 2009) Since, there are many situations where students work together on a project and prepare their report on the basis of it. In doing so every student works on certain areas and at the end in case the report in not good it helps to find the student who has not worked. Also universities have peer reviews which will help to find students who have not performed their work. This builds in the student the importance of working together. Students understand that to succeed need every department like everyone needs to perform well. This helps to make better managers who will be able to understand the all the minor things which are very valuable for success. Sixthly, according to James, 2009, it enhances assessment of students learning. Since, students are evaluated on different parameters it helps the student as students have to study everything that is relevant. This helps to build for the real life. Since, managers are able to do and see a problem with different angles it helps the students to deal with similar situation in the real life. When students encounter such a situation students will be able to deal with it in an efficient way. Seventhly, according to Lisa, 2009, students prepare reports on different subjects so it helps to understand the core competency. Various subjects are taught to students. Everyone student has a certain area where student are good. Preparing reports help to identify those. Suppose, for example a person is good in finance. This will enable to develop the report which will contain various things. This shows the students interest for that subject. This will help the student to pursue his career in that line. Since, it is done at a very young age it helps the student to plan his career in that way. It thus helps the society as students who are better prepared to deal with the subject take care of those departments for companies in the future. It thus helps to identify the area of competency. Eighthly, it helps in overall development. As, a student has to deal with various things in life students are better prepared. Managers know what to expect from the team as students know that in projects where a group of students work together. The student knows what all area of report needs to cover so that it is productive. Students know the area which will help students to perform upto their capabilities. Students know “how to deal with different people in a team while preparing report as different people have different behaviour”. This helps the student to deal with real life. Thus, we see that reports prove beneficial both for the students and the university. It helps to identify the weak areas and the areas of strength of both. This helps to work on those points and come up with better ways and techniques so that students are able to handle it in the future. It helps to prepare the students to face in real world. Students understanding improve as students know all the minor things that will have to deal with. It helps the student to work on subjects and areas students are good thus helping to achieve better result. It also gives the student the opportunity to show their versatility. It prepares students better.
